HEALTH PROMOTION

Providing specialist Health Promotion information to key health organisations about the African Caribbean Community.

The African Caribbean Community has a higher history of high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes than the indigenous population. In African Caribbean Women nationally the rate is 7 times greater and in men 4 times greater. The current health promotion services in the UK are inadequate in providing health promotion services to the African Caribbean Community. Both Rosemary Artman and Theresa Phillips are specialists in their field, during the last year they have achieved the following for Luton:

  • Set up 4 Luncheon Clubs for African Caribbean Elderly to prevent isolation and promote independence and well being

  • Organised a community health conference for the African Caribbean Community to raise awareness

  • Established the following support groups: Carers, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and Stroke

  • Produced a report on the Health Improvement Plan on the health expectations of the African Caribbean Community

  • Introduced health experts to deliver health messages to the community

  • Delivered training programmes to key health providers

  • Contributed to the work of the Commission of Health Improvement, the Department of Health and the Commission for Race Equality on health strategy.
